How to get The Hylian Shield in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

The Hylian Shield is one of the most recognisable pieces of kit in the Zelda series, probably only second to the Master Sword itself. It’s very easy to get The Hylian Shield in Tears of the Kingdom, and you can pretty much get it from the very start of the game once you land on Hyrule’s surface. Today I’m going to walk through how to get the Hylian Shield in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom.

Getting the Hylian Shield is nice and easy in Tears of the Kingdom, although you will want to prepare a little. Before you set off on your journey, you’ll need a way to create fire. I went back to the In-Isa Shrine on the Great Sky Island, and picked up some Fire Fruit from the Shrine. This is going to be useful later on for lighting a lamp. Also before setting off, pick up some arrows, and ideally 5-10 bomb flowers too if you want to fight the enemies guarding the Hylian Shield.

You have a couple of options with getting the Hylian Shield. You can run in there and grab the sheild in a stealthy way, or you can fight your way through the enemies. I went for the stealthy option, but if you want to fight, that’s OK too, it’s just going to take a little more time.

OK, let’s find the location for the Hylian Shield.

How to find the Hylian Shield location

The Hylian Shield is located under Hyrule Castle, and you can access it through the North West entrance vioa the docks. Travel to the Ishodag Shrine and then have a look at your map and place a marker at the entrance to the docks. Then make your way to the river bank and you’ll find a boat with a sail. You can either use a Zonai Device or do it the old fashioned way with a Korok Leaf and a stick. However you do it you’ll need to propel yourself up the river and against the current in the river and towards the Docks under Hyrule Castle. If you don’t have a Korok Leaf then you can cut down some trees near the location of the boat and then fuse one together with a stick, this will help you create wind to propel the boat.

Steer the boat around the north west part of under Hyrule Castle and land at The Docks. Here the Gloom Hands will appear. If you want to fight them then attack them with bomb arrows. Try to avoid them grabbing you otherwise they will kill you pretty quickly. Once you defeat them, Phantom Ganon will appear. To beat Phantom Ganon you have to dodge, parry and flurry rush. It’s a tough battle, but if you are patient it’s fairly straight forward after some practice.

I took another route. When the Gloom Hands tried to attack, I ran away and they dissappeared. I was expecting them to return when I went up the stairs, but they didn’t, and then I was free to get the Hylian Shield.

How to get the Hylian Shield

Either fight past the Gloom Hands and Phantom Ganon, or run past them and you’ll find a large lamp surrounded by smaller ones. Shoot a fire arrow in the middle and this will reveal a chest. Open up the chest to get the Hylian Shield. That’s it!
