Gloom is the black and red stuff in Tears of the Kingdom that’s going to cause you all kinds of problems. Not only is it going to drain your health, but it’s going to break your hearts too, so you can’t restore that health. Today I’m going to go through how to get Gloom Resistance, so you can battlea dn recover with ease in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom.
Gloom is everywhere in Hyrule these days, and especially down in the Depths. There’s plenty of good reasons to explore the depths, as it’s full of loot, so having decent Gloom Resistance is key to that exploration. Plus Gloom will come into play if you ever get attacked by Gloom Hands, or Phantom Ganon.
How Gloom works
Gloom is similar to tar, it’s red and black, plus it’s a sticky goop, and when you touch it, it drains your hearts, plus your hearts get cracked, meaning they cannot be refilled with health restoring items like food. Stand in gloom for long enough, Link’s heart icons will turn grey and you won’t be able to heal. You can quickly stand in the gloom and get away before any damage is done, but this window is very small, so it’s best to stay well clear of gloom all together.
How to get Gloom Resistance
There’s a couple of ways to get Gloom Resistance. You can make consumables with the rigth ingredients and you can get some armor. Dark Clumps are the magic ingredient you are looking to cook with if you want to make Gloom Resistance food.
You can get Dark Clumps by trading in Poes at the Statue in Lookout Landing (plus there are others around Hyrule), this is located under where we first met Purah. You can also get Dark Clumps by defeating enemies in the Depths.
Here’s a couple of recipes with Dark Clumps that will get you Gloom Resistance
Meat Skewer (03:00 minutes of gloom resistance): 1 Raw Meat, 1 Dark Clump
Meat Skewer (04:30 minutes of gloom resistance): 1 Raw Meat, 1 Dark Clump, 3 Hylian Tomatoes
Simmered Fruit (04:30 minutes of gloom resistance): 1 Dark Clump, 4 Hylian Tomatoes
To get these ingredients, find animals out there in the wild and kill them to get Raw Meat, and you’ll find Hylian Tomatoes on the outskirts of Kakariko Village. It’s also worth experimenting with other recipes, and share yours in the comments.
You can also get Gloom Resistance by wearing The Depths Armor. You can trade your Poes for this Gloom Resistance gear at Bargainer Statues.
Tunic of the Depths (150 poes)
Gaiters of the Depths (200 poes)
Hood of the Depths (300 poes)
How to recover Gloom Hearts
Sometimes, even if you are careful, you’ll get caught in the Gloom and you’ll need to restore your greyed-out hearts. The magic ingredient you are looking for here are Sundelions, which are flowers that tend to grow on Sky Islands. You can use Sundelions in your recipes to create food, that restore your gloomy hearts.
Here’s some recipes to get your started
Sunny Steamed Tomatoes (replenishes 7 normal hearts and 6 locked hearts by gloom): 1 Raw Prime Meat, 2 Hylian Tomatoes, 2 Sundelions.
Sunny Steamed Mushrooms (replenishes 1 and a half normal heart and 6 locked hearts by gloom): 3 Skyshrooms (also found around Sky Islands!), 2 Sundelions.
Sunny Fried Wild Greens (replenishes 9 locked hearts by gloom): 3 Sundelions
These meals will restore the hearts, but not the hearts themselves, so make sure to have food to heal Link’s grey-out gloom hearts, as well as food to restore health.
If you don’t have Sundelions then activating Lightroots in the Depths also restore all gloom hearts.
