Zelda Echoes of Wisdom is only a matter of days away, and some fans have got their hands on the game already at preview events. The menus have been revealed and show many key items will be in the game, alongside the Tri rod. That means we have items to find in the game. Today I want to have a look at some classic items from Zelda games past, plus also look ahead to what Nintendo could include in Zelda Echoes of Wisdom.
We’ve had a couple of trailers so far with the focus being on Zelda’s Tri-Rod, which allows Zelda to create echoes of objects in the world, including enemies. We’ve had confirmation of the return of Dungeons, plus we’ve seen inventory screens from those who played the game at PAX recently in North America (thanks to Captain Burgerson for the footage). This raising the tantilising prospect of other items being included in the game. That means some classic items could return from previous Zelda games and I’ve compiled a list of some of my favourites that I’d like to see added.
Nintendo are very likely to include new items too, but let’s kick off with some of the classic items that could return in Zelda Echoes of Wisdom.
Hammer
We saw a Magic Hammer in A Link To The Past. This was used for flipping over enemies, or penetrating their hard outer shells. It is also used to knock down certain fence posts blocking Link’s path. Link also finds a Hammer in Ocarina of Time found in the Fire Temple. It can serve as a replacement of the Master Sword or Biggoron’s Sword. One of which is to flip Torch Slugs over, leaving them completely harmless. Another is to press down Rusty Switches, and destroy red boulders. It is also key in defeating Volvagia. Both instances of the hammer allows Link to flip enemies, plus get to new places by hitting things in the ground blocking his path. A hammer certainly could come in handy for Zelda as she’s trying to get around Hyrule, or in the Still World.
Ocarina or Flute
The Ocarina was central to Link’s adventure in Ocarina of Time, allowing him to travel through time. In a Link to the Past Link also had a flute, which allowed him to fast travel around the map. Link also had an Ocarina in Link’s Awakening and he could play 3 songs. The Ballad of the Windfish was key to opening up The Wind Fish’s Egg at the end of the game. Manbo’s Mambo allowed Link to warp to Manbo’s pond, plus could warp Link to the start of a dungeon. The Song of Soul allowed Link to get the Flying Rooster.
I would love to see a musical instrument added back into Echoes of Wisdom. In the past these musical instruments have been helpful with traveling. Given the map looks large, it’d make sense for Zelda to have some kind of fast travel mechanic. We’ve seen the statues that Zelda can interact with that look like a fast travel mechanic, so perhaps that’s off the table. I really like Link’s Awakening Ocarina, where Link learns multiple songs that have different uses. Rather than travel, I’d love to see an instrument affect enemies, perhaps by putting them to sleep when Zelda plays a specific tune.
Shovel
The simple shovel is a great item because you can find buried treasure or items. In A Link To The Past Link can use the shovel to help find Flute Boy’s flute. Link can also buy a Shovel in Link’s Awakening. While it’s uses are limited, it has the potential to be great because items can be buried all over the map, and it’s items like this that help bring a sense of wonder to the Legend of Zelda series. I can imagine Zelda using a Shovel to dig up items in Hyrule.
Magic Powder
Magic Power is a great item, again, because it has multiple uses. In Link’s Awakening Link sprinkles some on the racoon’s nose to pass through through the forest. You have to find a magic toadstool and take it to the Witch to turn it into Magic Powder. It’s also used to light lamps and turn enemies into other things. Magic Powder is another one of those classic Zelda items that bring a sense of wonder to the player, as you never know what it’s going to do. I hope they include it in Echoes of Wisdom.
Power Bracelet
Link is pretty weak in some Zelda games, and the Power Bracelet can be used to help him pick up large items. This can include pots, rocks and other things. It can also be upgraded. We’ve seen Zelda moving large boulders with Bind, so perhaps she doesn’t need a power bracelet. I think it’s a useful item, because she could pick something up and walk over to something else and place it down or throw it in a different direction. Bind seems a little restrictive with Zelda’s movements, so I’d like to see a Power Bracelet in Zelda’s hands to
Deep within Bottle Grotto, the second dungeon of the game, the Power Bracelet can be found. It can make Link lift up many different objects like rocks, pots, etc. This item is vital on defeating the boss of Bottle Grotto, the Genie. By using the Power Bracelet, Link can throw the Genie’s bottle against the wall many times before it breaks.
Lens of Truth
The Lens of Truth allows Link to see invisible walls, see through walls that weren’t really there, as well as invisible enemies in Ocarina of Time. Zelda has the ability to copy items and objects, but that’s no good if you can’t see them. The Lens of Truth could be a good addition to the game, especially when it comes to puzzle solving in Hyrule and the dungeons in the Still World.
Zora’s Flippers
We know that two types of Zora are in the game, river and sea. I think we’ve seen Zelda swimming in the trailers too, so it makes sense to think we could be getting the Zora flippers too. Perhaps we get an item from both Zora. Or perhaps we start with one type of item and then it gets upgraded with the other. If we’re getting items, plus we know Zelda swims, then I think its a safe bet to get Zora flippers in Echoes of Wisdom.
Magic Cape
The Magic Cape was an item in A Link To The Past. It’s used to turn Link invisible, rendering him invincible for a short time as well as allowing him to pass through obstacles. I do like the concept of invisibility, whether it’s the Lens of Truth and seeing invisible items, or using the magic cape and making yourself invisible to enemies. It’s another one of those magical items, and hopefully we’ll see it in the game.
Boomberang
The boomberang is a classic item, and it’s made its way into many Zelda games starting from the classic 2D Adventures all the way to the most recent 3D games with Breath of the Wild. It’s a versatile item allowing us to attack from a distance, but can also be used to hit switches or something retrieve items from afar. It may not be new, but it’s been included in most of the games for a reason, and I’d like to see it in Echoes of Wisdom.
Hookshot
Finally, we have one of the most iconic items in the Zelda series, and that’s the hookshot. This allows you to reach far away items, get over gaps, and attack enemies. It’s been Link’s tool in many a Zelda game, but I’d love to see Zelda finally get her hands on it. We’ve seen her use Reverse Bond to attach herself to items to help her move, for example, we’ve seen her attach herself to a bird to fly a short distance helping traversal. The hookshot is iconic and I can imagine the shouts of delight from players when they discover it in a dungeon in the Still World.
As for items I’d like to see Nintendo add to the game, I’d like to see them add some spells for Zelda. We’ve talked about sending enemies to sleep or making herself invisible, both would be good spells or abilities to have through items. Given we’re going to ride horses, perhaps items to help improve the horses would be good, such as a variety of saddles tat have different abilities like making the horse run faster or jump higher.
It’d also be interesting to see Zelda use different types of Magic Rods. Tri appears to be the star of the show, but that inventory page shows a lot of key items, and perhaps there are other Magic Rods available in the game. We’ve seen fire, ice and lightning in previous games, it’d be interesting to combine Zelda’s Light Arrows with the Magic Rod concept, so a magic rod that shoots beams of light.

Make Zelda do magic, such as elemental magic (fire, water, thunder, heal) and items that refect her intellect/godess power.
@1980latinlover
I would love it if they brought back the hook shot. That is such a handy item to have.
@shanesimons8987
Need a boomerang or similar, picking up rupees and stunning distant enemies is Goated ☑️
@firenze6478
I’m hoping that Zelda’s items are more magic based to stand out from Link
@dustybees6308
I actually think that every time you beat a boss you get an item from link in the sword fighter form. Ie. his bow or his shield. I bet the same will happen with the Ganon Form after she claims his trident.
@MichaelRocks39
I’m just begging for a bow! Zelda never has a sword, so I can forgive that, but we NEED a bow!
@MichaelRocks39 She has one in Hyrule Warriors, so i can definetly see her getting one in Echoes of Wisdom.
