How to get through the first 3 days in The Legend of Zelda Majora’s Mask

Majora’s Mask is the follow up to Ocarina of Time and it’s a one of the most uniaue Zelda adventures. Today I’m going to run through a guide for the first 3 days, so you are prepared and ready to explore Termina in The Legend of Zelda Majora’s Mask.

Introduction

First of all we’re going to see Link, he’s riding through the forest on Epona, and he’s looking a little sad. Two fairies appear in the forest and they scare Epona, knocking Link off his horse. Skull Kid appears, he finds the Ocarina of Time and starts to play with it. Link then wakes up and trys to grab the Ocarina back, Skull Kid jumps out of the way and onto Epona who bolts, dragging Link behind them.

Lost Woods

This is where you first get control of Link and you get a short tutorial for how to move, plus slash your sword to get some rupees from the bushes. Try and stock up on rupees here, as they are going to be useful later on.

Next we learn how to jump, and you have to chase Skull Kid through the forest. There are some tree stumps sticking out of the ground here, so you can practice running and jumping off them. Run towards the edge and jump off and Link will automatically jump over the gap.

Link then falls off a ledge, lands on a flower and Skull Kid will appear saying he’s done something to Epona. Skull Kids then performs some magic and turns Link into a Deku Scrub! Skull kid laughs as Link realises he’s changed into a new form.

Meet Tatl

Now you regain control of Link in his new Deku-scrub form. Walk around and test out the controls and you can spin with the A button. Then go through the door by interacting with it. Go around the corner and you’ll meet Tatl, who agrees to help you out until you find Skull Kid. Tatl does a similar job to Navi from Ocarina of Time, helping you lock onto targets and telling you about them if it’s an object.

You’ll encounter a flower, and you can stand on top of these and Tatl will notify you and tell you about them. You can interact with the flowers by diving into them and jumping high, then floating down with your Deku abilities. Use the flowers to fly over to the other side of the room. The idea here is to use the Deku Flowers to go from platform to platform. Then you can get your first item, the Deku Nuts. These are useful items as they allow you to stun enemies and shoot things from a dfistance, like popping balloons. Keep making your way over the other side of the room and interact with the small Deku Tree.

Clock Tower Basement

Go through the corridor and enter the room and you’ll see the waterwheel then go through the double doors. Here you’re going to meet the Mask Salesman. He travels around Hyrule selling various masks, but Skull Kid has stolen a powerful magic mask called Majora’s Mask. The Masked Salesman wants you to get it back, and in return he’ll help you turn back into your normal form. Also, The Masked Salesman is leaving in 3 days, so you don’t have much time to find Skull Kid, get the mask and get help from this mysterious stranger. Once you have finished talking to him, go out through the doors and check out Clock Town.

Great Fairy

Once you make your way into the Town, you’ll get a brief overview and Tatl will tell you to go and see The Great Fairy. This is a good time to explore Clock Town and get used to the area. Talk to everyone you meet and if you played Ocarina of Time, then you’ll recognise a few familiar faces. The towns people will also tell you about the creepy Moon that is looming over Clock Town. Everyone appears to be preparing for an event called The Carnival of Time, which also happens in 3 days.

From the Clock Tower you’ll want to go north, through the entrance to North Clock Town. Here you will Tingle for the first time, a strange man who wants to be a fairy. He’s selling a map of Clock Town for 5 rupees, so those rupees that you picked up earlier in the game are going to come in use here. Buy the Clock Town map from Tingle and leave Tingle behind… for now.

Next you want to go to the cave in North Clock Town and meet The Great Fairy. She has been shattered into pieces due to Skull Kid and you’ll need to find a Stray Fairy in Clock Town to restore The Great Fairy to her regular form. The location of the Stray Fairy depends on the time of day.

Day – During the day you’ll find the Stray Fairy in the Laundry Pool in the Southwest corner of Clock Town.

Night – During the night you’ll find it in East Clock Town in the middle of the square. It’s too high to grab so you’ll need to use the nearby flower to jump and get it.

Once you have the Stray Fairy, go back to the Great Fairy in the cave in North Clock Town, and all the Fairies will combine and restore the Great Fairy. She’ll give you a magic power, allowing you to shoot bubbles. She also tells you where to find Skull Kid, and to go to the Observatory. Finally, she says come back when you have been restored to regular Link.

Bomber’s Code

Go back outside and you’ll see Tingle again, but now he’s floating around on a balloon. There’s a small kid here, he’s trying to shoot down a balloon with a Majora’s Mask symbol on it. Speak to the kid and he’ll tell you to go away, however, use your new bubble power and shoot the balloon to pop it. To do this press the B button, you’ll go into first person and then hold down the bubble to inflate the bubble, then let it go to shoot in that direction. Pop the balloon and this will impress the kid enough to be able to speak to him. He tells you about his gang, The Bombers, and he says he’ll let you in the gang, which also allows to you get to the Observatory. To become a member of the gang you’ll have to find all the members of the Bombers in a game of hide-and-seek, and they can be found all over Clock Town.

The kids run off and hide, and you have to go and find all 5 members of the gang. Be aware, when you find them they will run off, so you’ll have to catch them. The location of the kids is different on the 3DS and N64 version of the game. Check out the map for the N64 version, then for the 3DS version you’ll find a kid in each of the areas in Clock Town.

North Clock Town – At the northeast corner
East Clock Town – Near the bell at the higher level of the Stock Pot Inn. Use the Deku Flower to launch yourself up there.
South Clock Town – Hiding inside a crate right in the center of the area.
Laundry Pool – Hiding inside a crate near the water.
West Clock Town – Walking around in the higher part of the area.

Once you have caught the kids you’ll be back in North Clock Town. The Bombers say you can’t join the club, but they’ll let you hang out in their secret hideout in the Observatory. Then the kid will give you a code. If you are playing the N64 version, make a note of the code oherwise you’ll have to catch the kids again. On the 3DS, you’ll store the code in the Bomber’s Notebook.

The kids tell you the code by standing in a line with numbers on their shirts. The combination is different each time, and there are 120 combinations, so make sure to keep that password safe. You’ll need it a few times in the game, so take a photo with your phone or write it down somewhere.

Now you have the password you can go to East Clock Town and speak to the Bomber kid with the yellow cap. He’ll ask for the secret code, give it to him and he’ll let you pass.

Moon’s Tear

Make your way into the Bomber’s Hideout and work your way through this area. Be careful for the Skulltula, they will hang down from the ceiling. Wait until they turn their back and shoot a bubble into it until it dies. You can also use a Deku nut. Keep going through the passage and then make your way up and shoot the balloon in the way to make your way past and up the stairs into the Observatory.

Go up the stairs and speak to Professor Shikashi. He explains Skull Kid has been causing all kinds of mischief, and then offers you to look through the telescope. Have a look, zoom in and you’ll see Skull Kid. He looks at the Moon, which then starts to cry and something shiny falls to the ground, make a note of where it falls. Go out the door and pick up the Moon Tear. Once you have done this, make your way back through the sewers and back into Clock Town.

Get back to the town and go to South Clock Town and walk up to the yellow flower. A Business Scrub will then fly down. He says he’ll trade you the flower for a Moon Tear, which is a gift for his wife. Select the Moon Tear from the menu and place it on one of the C buttons, and then give it to the Business Scrub. He’ll then give you the Land Title Deed, which you’ll need later on.

Get the Ocarina

You next task is to get the Ocarina back, however you have some time to play with. You have to wait until the night of the Carnival of Time to access The Clock Tower. Ideally you’ll wander around Clock Town speaking to various people, getting to know them and the area.

The Scarecrow

Go back to the Observatory to find the Scarecrow, or you can find one in the Trading Post (West Clock Town). Have a chat with the Scarecrow and dance with him to pass the time more quickly, you can dance until the evening of the Final Day.

The Bank

As you make your way to the Clock Tower, quickly stop off in West Clock Town and speak to the man sitting there. He’ll stamp your hand with ink, which allows you to open a bank account. This allows you to store rupees, so you can save them for later. In the 3DS version of the game the banker is in the South Clock Town.

Carnival of Time

Make your way to South Clock Town and use the flower to fly up to the clock tower. At 12:00 on the last night you’ll see a cutscene with fireworks going off celebrating the Carnival of Time. The top of the clock tower flips open and the door opens too. Now, run up the stairs and face off against Skull Kid.

After the short cutscene, Skull Kid screams and the moon starts to fall even faster. Then you’ll get control of Link. Target Skull Kid and blow a bubble at him, causing him to drop the Ocarina of Time. Then, go and grab it.

Link then remembers a conversation with Princess Zelda, where she’s teaching him The Song of Time. She explains it could be useful to get some help from the Godess of Time if Link was ever in trouble.

After you have learnt the song, select the Ocarina from the menu and play the Song of Time and it’ll take you back 72 hours to the dawn of the first day. Link is still a Deku Scrub, but you have the Ocarina of Time.

The Deku Mask

Now you have the Ocarina, go and speak to the Mask Salesman, given he said he’d help you out. Go to the Clock Tower basement to speak to him. The Masked Salesman teaches you a song and this transforms Link back into a Hylian, but you have a Deku Mask left behind allowing you to become a Deku Scrub anytime you want.

Unfortunately, The Mask Salesman is pretty angry you haven’t got Majora’s Mask from Skull Kid. He then tells you more about Majora’s Mask, how powerful it is and how Skull Kid stole it from him. If you are playing the 3DS version, then you’ll get the Bombers Notebook here, which allows you to track side quests.

That’s pretty much it for the introduction part of the game. You’ll learned about the 3 days time limit, the power of Masks, got your Ocarina back plus learned some powerful songs. Now, it’s time to venture out and explore Termina.

Hopefully this helps you get through the first section of Majora’s Mask. Let me know in the comments what you think of the game so far.
