2025 is going to be a huge year for Nintendo with the expected release of the Nintendo Switch 2. But what does 2025 have in store for the Legend of Zelda franchise? I’m going to dive into this topic today and look at our collective hopes and dreams for the Legend of Zelda series in 2025.
2025 has kicked off and that means a whole host of new opportunities for the Legend of Zelda series. It’s been a busy few years recently with Tears of the Kingdom releasing in 2023, and that was swiftly followed up by Echoes of Wisdom in 2024. We knew about Tears of the Kingdom since 2019 which led to a long build up and high expectations. The appearance of a new top-down Zelda game, with Zelda as the protagonist came as a huge surprise, which was announced in June and then released in September.
Without further delay, let’s have a look at hopes and dreams for the Zelda series in 2025.
Nintendo Switch 2
First off, it’s very likely we have a new Nintendo console releasing this year with the Nintendo Switch 2 coming out, hopefully in the first half of the year. It’s highly likely that Nintendo will have a first party line up to go with the console launch, but my money is on a new 3D Mario game rather than a Zelda title.
If you’ve been paying attention to the Switch 2 leaks (which have gone absolutely crazy this week) then we’ve seen a lot of renders of consoles, joycons and accessories. We haven’t seen much, if anything related to software.
Nintendo had a fairly ambitious goal of releasing something for the Nintendo Switch each year. 2017 saw Breath of the Wild, 2018 Hyrule Warriors, 2019 Link’s Awakening, 2020 Age of Calamity, 2021 Skyward Sword HD. I would guess Tears of the Kingdom was supposed to launch in 2022, but we did at least get Majora’s Mask on Nintendo Switch Online. If you are a fan of the Zelda series, the Nintendo Switch is THE console to have.
2025 could be the perfect year to release the Wind Waker and Twilight Princess HD games that originally came out on Wii U. According to Jeff Grubb they’ve been ready and done for some time now, and Nintendo are just waiting for the perfect moment, or a quiet time to release them. I do wonder if they are going to come out together or separately. It would make better business sense to release them separately and given them the Skyward Sword treatment, and celebrate these games. From an audience point of view I wouldn’t say no to both of them being released at the same time in one package, but I can’t remember the last time Nintendo released a package like this.
Another way Nintendo could release these games is through a Gamecube collection added to Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo have confirmed Nintendo Switch Online will persist through to the next generation of Nintendo Switch, and adding support for Gamecube games to Nintendo Switch Online would be the perfect announcement for year one of the new console. I would love to see games like Super Smash Bros Melee, Animal Crossing, Pikmin 2, Star Wars Rogue Squadron II and Mario Kart Double Dash arrived with Wind Waker and Twilight Princess.
Nintendo Music
Another surprising release in 2024 was the Nintendo Music app. We have selected music from Breath of the Wild, Ocarina of Time and Skyward Sword was added in the backend of 2024. Nintendo has a wealth of amazing music from the Legend of Zelda series they could pull from, personally, I would love to see A Link To The Past or Wind Waker get added to the Nintendo Music app.
Concert
Talking of Zelda music, we did also get a Zelda concert in 2024. This was part of Nintendo Live in Tokyo and included music from Tears of the Kingdom, Link’s Awakening, Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild and much more. I would love to see more of these. It’s great Nintendo put on this concert and then on YouTube so people all around the world could enjoy it. If you haven’t seen the concert, then check it out, right after this video.
Merchandise
Lego teamed up with the Legend of Zelda series in 2024 to release the Great Deku Tree. In 2025 we’re going to get some new Figma figures from the Good Smile Company. We have two figures from Tears of the Kingdom including Link and Zelda. They are very good looking figures and are available for pre-order if you are interesting in that kind of thing.
Movie
We had the movie reveal back in 2023, and since then we haven’t heard very much, other than it’s going to be live action. The director came out to say at the end of 2024 that the movie is in-development and they are very excited about the project, but it’s got a release date of 202X, which means it could be releasing as late as 2029. We don’t know anything about casting, story, or anything. As a Zelda fan this is a difficult one for me. The Super Mario movie made sense, it was animated, it was better than the 90s Bob Hoskins version, but a live action Zelda movie has me worried.
Can they pull it off and create a movie that doesn’t absolutely stink? I could imagine something similar to the Avatar movies where actors are augmented with graphics to create a seamless live-action movie, but that has one of the buggest budgets of all time, and no offense to Wes Ball, I doubt they are working with those budgets. I could be completely wrong here, but I would love to hear some reassuring Zelda movie new in 2025, whatever form that takes.

If they exist, I think we will either get The Wind Waker or Twilight Princess coming to both the Switch and Switch 2. Furthermore the time is due for some official news about The Legend of Zelda movie if you ask me.

A new game is unlikely but I woulf enjoy a new NSO virtual console with gamecube maybe hehe
@GamingReinvented
I don’t think a new game is particularly likely, but a remake or remaster seems entirely possible. Could be the Wind Waker/Twilight Princess ones, it could be remakes of Ocarina of Time or Majora’s Mask or it could be something else entirely, but it seems pretty logical for Nintendo to have some sort of minor Zelda release this year.
@MartKart
This year might not get anything Zelda related, maybe a trailer for the filming of the Zelda movie.

I think Switch 2 will come out in a few months and with it BotW HD. The movie will not come out for another like 2 or 3 years. And we probably won’t get another 3D Zelda game for 2 or 3 years as well. That way the movie comes out and then the new game does shortly after.

Perhaps A Link Between Worlds HD for the original Switch and a Hyrule Warriors game focusing on the Ancient Hero for the Switch successor.
Let me know what you want to see from Zelda in 2025.
