How to Use Zelda Notes with Breath of the Wild & Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 editions

This week Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom launched their Switch 2 editions alongside Nintendo Switch 2, and they are both absolutely beautiful. Zelda notes quietly dropped alongside them, and this is a quiet revolution in Zelda gameplay, so today I am going to talk about it.

What Is Zelda Notes?

Zelda Notes is a companion service designed to enhance your adventure in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. It adds new dialogue, unlockable medals for completing various in-game actions, and other interactive features to deepen your experience.

However, setting it up can be a bit tricky—so here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started.

Zelda Notes Requirements
To use Zelda Notes, you’ll need the following:

Switch 2 Edition of the Game
You must own the Switch 2 Edition of either Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom.

If you have the original version on Switch, you can upgrade to the Switch 2 Edition via the Nintendo eShop for $9.99.

Digital and physical versions of the upgraded editions are also available for purchase.

A Smart Device with Internet Access
Zelda Notes requires a smartphone or tablet that stays connected to the internet or a cellular network while you play.

An Online Nintendo Switch 2 Connection
Your Nintendo Switch 2 must be connected to the internet during gameplay to enable Zelda Notes features.

How to Use Zelda Notes

  1. Launch the Switch 2 Edition of Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom
Once you’ve met the requirements, make sure your Nintendo Switch 2 is connected to the internet.
  2. Start the Game
Open the Switch 2 Edition of the Zelda title you want to play.
  3. Access Zelda Notes via the Nintendo Switch App
With the game running and your console online, the Zelda Notes service will automatically become available within the Nintendo Switch App. From there, you can view new dialogue, track your medals, and explore additional features.

How to Set Up and Use Zelda Notes in the Nintendo Switch App

  1. Download the Nintendo Switch App
Start by downloading the Nintendo Switch App on your smart device. It’s available on both the App Store and Google Play.

Once installed, open the app and log in using the Nintendo Account linked to your user profile on the Nintendo Switch 2 console.

Tip: You can also generate a QR code for quick access to the app download:

Launch the Switch 2 Edition of Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom.

On the title screen, go to Options and set Zelda Notes to “Enabled.”

  1. Open Zelda Notes in the App
With the app set up and your device connected to the internet:

Navigate to the Game-Specific Services section on the app’s home screen.

Tap the Zelda Notes icon.

You’ll be prompted to choose between Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild.

Select the game you’re playing to access Zelda Notes features like new dialogue and medal tracking.

Important:
Make sure your Nintendo Switch 2 is online and running the Switch 2 Edition of the game. If not, you’ll only see a basic overview of Zelda Notes instead of the full interactive features.

Enable Zelda Notes in Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom
If you haven’t already, make sure Zelda Notes is enabled in your game. Here’s how to do it:

Launch the Switch 2 Edition of Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom on your Nintendo Switch 2.

Load your saved game.

Open the in-game menu, go to the System tab, and select Options.

Set Zelda Notes to “Enabled.”

This step is essential for activating the Zelda Notes features within the Nintendo Switch App.

Start Using Zelda Notes Features

Once set up, you can begin enjoying Zelda Notes’ features—such as item sharing, daily bonuses, and more. Many of the actions you’ve performed on your current save file will automatically populate the My Play Data stats.

Important: Some activities completed before the updates released just before the Switch 2 launch won’t be tracked. For example, weapons, materials, and rupees collected prior to those updates may not appear, so your initial stats in My Play Data could show as zero.

Internet Connection Requirements
To fully access Zelda Notes, your Nintendo Switch 2 must be connected to the internet. Here’s what’s affected by this:

Voice Memories: You can listen to any Voice Memories you’ve found offline, but the tracking features won’t work without an internet connection.

Navigation: This feature requires an online connection to function.

Item and Autobuild Sharing: Sharing items and autobuilds also requires your Switch 2 to be connected online.

Keeping your Switch 2 online ensures you get the most out of Zelda Notes’ features.

Zelda Notes Not Working or Unable to Connect?

If you’re having trouble accessing certain Zelda Notes features, it’s likely that your Nintendo Switch 2 isn’t properly connected to the service. Here’s what you can do to fix it:

Make sure your smart device running Zelda Notes is connected to the internet or cellular network.

Verify that your Nintendo Switch 2 console is connected to the internet.

In the Zelda game, open the menu, go to the System tab, select Options, and ensure Zelda Notes is set to “Enabled.”

Within Zelda Notes, open Navigation or Voice Memories and tap the circular arrow in the top-right corner to try reconnecting. When connected, the Switch icon in the corner will turn green.

If the connection still doesn’t establish, fully close both the Switch 2 software and the Nintendo Switch App, then restart and try again.
