First of all here’s the big announcement from Miyamoto

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Maze Runner director Wes Ball is officially leading fans on a journey to Hyrule. While we’re still waiting on casting news for iconic roles like Link and Zelda, Ball has already teased his ambitious vision for The Legend of Zelda movie.

Details are still under wraps, but we finally have a release date locked in—though not even the Song of Time can make it arrive any faster. In the meantime, we’ve gathered everything you need to know about this highly anticipated adventure: casting buzz, plot speculation, and all the latest updates.

This is shaping up to be one of the most exciting video game adaptations in years. Scroll down for your full guide to The Legend of Zelda movie.

When is the release date?

The Legend of Zelda movie is officially slated to hit theaters worldwide on 7th May, 2027.

Nintendo first unveiled the project in November 2023, later confirming Maze Runner and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes director Wes Ball as the one leading the charge. The release date was revealed on March 28, 2025, via Nintendo’s newly launched mobile app.

Interestingly, the film is set to debut shortly after the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which lands in 2026—marking a bold one-two punch for Nintendo’s growing cinematic universe.

What will the story be?

One of the biggest questions surrounding The Legend of Zelda movie is what story it will tell—and which of the beloved games it might adapt. So far, Nintendo has kept plot details tightly under wraps, but one thing feels like a safe bet: both Link and Zelda will be front and center.

Across decades of games, the core elements of the Zelda universe have remained remarkably consistent. Link, a courageous warrior of the elf-like Hylian race, embarks on epic quests to save the kingdom of Hyrule—often with the help of Princess Zelda, whose royal bloodline is tied to the goddess Hylia. Looming over it all is Ganon, the iconic villain and dark sorcerer bent on conquering the world, usually through the power of the sacred Triforce. While the movie may take creative liberties, fans can likely expect many of these key pieces to remain intact.

As for what tone and direction the movie will take, director Wes Ball has dropped a few intriguing hints. Speaking with Total Film in 2024, he said:

“I have this awesome idea. I’ve been thinking about it for a long freakin’ time—how cool a Zelda movie would be… I want to fulfill people’s greatest desires. I know this franchise means a lot to people, and I want it to be a serious movie. A real movie that can give people an escape.”

He added that the film should feel “real,” while still maintaining that signature Zelda whimsy:

“Something serious and cool, but fun and whimsical.”

Ball has also spoken about bringing over lessons from his previous work, such as Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, saying:

“Keep the money on the screen. Be ambitious. Be confident in the talent around you. Try to do something great.”

Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida chimed in as well, describing the project simply as “an amazing tale of adventure and discovery.” Beyond that, though, no official storylines have been confirmed.

With so many games to choose from, the possibilities are vast. Some fans hope the film draws inspiration from Breath of the Wild, with its sweeping open-world exploration. Others are rooting for a more grounded adaptation inspired by 1998’s Ocarina of Time, widely considered one of the greatest video games of all time.

For now, it’s all speculation—but whatever path the filmmakers choose, expectations couldn’t be higher.

Who will the cast be?

The cast for The Legend of Zelda movie hasn’t been officially announced yet, but that hasn’t stopped fans from passionately assembling their dream lineups—especially for the iconic roles of Zelda and Link.

One fan favorite for Princess Zelda is Euphoria star Hunter Schafer, whose ethereal presence and quiet strength seem tailor-made for the role. She even addressed the speculation in a red carpet interview with Variety, saying:

“That would be so cool. I love the game, personally. I played it as a kid and I still play it now. Who knows! That would be pretty cool.”

Other fan-cast favorites for Zelda include The Witcher’s Freya Allan, Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan, and The Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy.

As for Link, the internet has been casting the silent hero for years. Suggestions range from Spider-Man’s Tom Holland and Game of Thrones’ Thomas Brodie-Sangster to Euphoria’s Jacob Elordi. Variety even compiled a list of contenders from its contributors, highlighting names like Jacob Tremblay and Justice Smith.

So far, there’s been no official word from Nintendo or director Wes Ball on casting decisions. But with fan anticipation building fast, any announcement is sure to make headlines. We’ll keep you updated as soon as the official cast is revealed.
