Right, so yesterday a set of images turned up online that, if they’re real, are the first look at Zelda’s 40th anniversary hardware. A special edition Switch 2 console and a matching Pro Controller. I want to walk through what’s actually in these images, where they came from, and why I think there’s more going on here than “new hardware.”

Let’s start with what we’re looking at. The console comes in a black-and-gold dock, with Triforce worked into the design, and the Joy-Con 2 controllers are green with their own Triforce detailing. The Pro Controller is the same colour story: black, gold, green, but the standout piece is the Hylian Crest sitting right in the centre of the shell. And on the packaging for both, there’s this 40th anniversary logo showing Link exactly as he looked in the original 1986 game—full 8-bit sprite, tunic, sword, shield.

Now, sourcing. This started with an account called Centro LEAKS on X, which posted on the eleventh of August, and it spread from there onto Reddit’s leaks community. From that point, every major outlet picked it up. Kotaku, GameSpot, Nintendo Everything, My Nintendo News- all within a few hours of each other. None of them has an independent source beyond the same original images. So what we’ve got is one leak, widely reported, not four separate confirmations. That distinction matters, and I don’t think enough coverage is making it clear.

Here’s the bit I actually find interesting, and it’s not the hardware itself. It’s a line buried in the GameSpot piece. They point out that the design doesn’t obviously tie into the Ocarina of Time remake. No remake branding, no remake imagery, nothing that says “this is the OoT edition” specifically. Instead, they compare it to the gold Hyrule Edition Switch Lite that came out with Echoes of Wisdom. That was a general Zelda celebration piece, not tied to one specific game.

So there are two ways to read this. Either it’s a broader 40th anniversary product that happens to be arriving near the remake, the same way Nintendo did the Tears of the Kingdom OLED model, or the branding on the box doesn’t spell out “Ocarina of Time” because Nintendo hasn’t locked the remake’s own marketing yet and didn’t want to date the hardware to it. I lean toward the second read, purely because a 40th anniversary console without any remake tie-in feels like a strange release window if there isn’t a major game landing at the same time. But that’s not something confirmed anywhere in the reporting.

It’s also worth putting this in the context of what Nintendo has actually done before. The Tears of the Kingdom OLED model launched right alongside that game, fully branded, no ambiguity. The Hyrule Edition Switch Lite, on the other hand, went the general anniversary route, gold and understated, and it launched close to Echoes of Wisdom without being explicitly branded as an Echoes of Wisdom console. So Nintendo has used both approaches before. That’s exactly why the ambiguity in this leak isn’t unusual for them; it’s actually consistent with how they’ve handled Zelda hardware in the past. It just means we can’t use the branding alone to pin down the release window.

Worth mentioning too, there’s a live debate in the comments under the My Nintendo News article about whether these images are even genuine. A few people have pointed to the triangle pattern next to the Triforce emblem on the Pro Controller box, saying the spacing looks hand-drawn rather than manufactured, and that the border on the Triforce itself looks unfinished, like it just stops rather than connecting up properly. I went and looked at the images myself. I can see what they’re pointing at. It’s not conclusive either way for me, but I’m not going to pretend that concern doesn’t exist. If this turns out to be a fake or an AI mockup that got taken as real, it wouldn’t be the first time a convincing leak fell apart under scrutiny. So take everything here with that caveat sitting underneath it.

Now, assuming it is real, or at least assuming Nintendo is planning something like this even if these exact images aren’t the final product, here’s where it gets relevant to what we already talked about. In the last members video, I walked through why the 12th November looks like the more credible release date for the Ocarina of Time remake, based on that amiibo shipment pattern. If Nintendo is planning to launch special edition hardware alongside the remake, that’s exactly the kind of thing that gets manufactured and shipped to retail well in advance of an announcement. Hardware leaks like this one tend to surface earlier than software leaks, because there are more hands in the supply chain who can photograph a box. So if anything, this leak makes me more confident in that November window, not less.

On pricing, nobody’s said anything official, and I’d be making numbers up if I gave you a figure, so I’m not going to. Based on Nintendo’s past special editions, I will say that the console bundle and the Pro Controller have historically been sold separately, not as a single package. That’s worth bearing in mind if you’re planning to budget for one or both.

Stock is the other thing I’d flag now rather than later. Special edition Zelda hardware has sold out fast every single time Nintendo has done this; the Hyrule Edition Switch Lite included, and a 40th anniversary console tied to one of the most anticipated remakes in years is not going to sit on shelves. If this is real and it does land near a November launch, I wouldn’t expect a long window between announcement and it disappearing from retailers. That’s not a reason to panic, but if you know you want one, it’s worth having pre-order alerts ready rather than waiting to see the official reveal first.

The summary here is this. Something is very likely coming. The visual language, the anniversary framing, the timing near a major Zelda release, all of that tracks with how Nintendo has handled this before. Whether these specific images are the final retail product, whether they’re even genuine, that I can’t tell you for certain. What I’d watch for next is either a Nintendo Direct segment or a listing appearing on a retailer site, because that’s usually what turns a leak into a confirmation.
